Christmas Lights in Old Rauma

The lights bringing light and the Christmas atmosphere to Old Rauma are eagerly awaited as a sign of the beginning of the Christmas season for many. The illuminations are on from November 25, 2023, to January 7, 2024. The lights in Savilanpuisto and Vähäraastuvankatu will be on until the end of the Lumen Light Art Event, i.e., until January 13, 2024.

The lighting installations are carried out responsibly and thoughtfully. They bring joy and the Christmas atmosphere to the darkness of winter. The city’s Christmas lights use LED technology, which consumes little energy. The lighting and the burning times of the installations have been designed to consider people living nearby and any potential light and/or sound disturbances.

Light and Sound Installation “Finland’s Smallest Christmas Street” in Kitukränn

The light and sound art work The smallest Christmas street in Finland.

The light and sound installation “Finland’s Smallest Christmas Street” is on display in Kitukränn in Old Rauma from November 25, 2023, to January 7, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

The artist behind the work is Jaakko Niemelä, a Rauma-based artist whose central element in his works is light. Niemelä is interested in combining natural light and artificial light, as well as shadows and darkness.

The artist designed the installation for his hometown in the heart of Old Rauma, on Finland’s narrowest street, Kitukränni. The installation is executed in keeping with the spirit of Old Rauma and consists of five fake windows attached to the walls of houses. The windows project images drawn by the artist with light. The sound environment of the installation includes household sounds and children’s stories about what happens behind the windows.

Kitukränn – the smallest Christmas street in Finland was on display for the first time in Christmas 2021.

Lights on the Main Streets of Old Rauma

Christmas lights on the Kuninkaankatu street in Old Rauma.

The tree frame lights installed above Kuninkaankatu and Kauppakatu date back to 2001. Designed by architect Jukka Koivula, these lights feature various themes that can be noticed when walking down the street and paying attention to the patterns found on the green light trees’ tops. The patterns are designed so that the theme changes depending on where the tree frame is located on the street.

Old Rauma’s abundant light decorations include light wreaths on lampposts, lights on the large Christmas tree on the square, lace light art projected onto the Old Town Hall’s wall, and illuminated coniferous garlands at the entrances of business premises.

The city of Rauma, Rauma Entrepreneurs, and the Old Rauma Foundation collaborate to ensure that people walking on the streets can enjoy beautiful, festively illuminated street views. Attention has been paid to the environmental friendliness of the lighting. The lights in the tree frames were changed to energy-efficient LED lights in 2014.

Old Rauma’s Christmas lights are traditionally turned on during Rauma’s Christmas opening, bringing warm ambiance to Old Rauma even after the turn of the year.
